Comuna 13 - Graffiti Tour

Among the myriad of experiences waiting to be explored in Medellin, Colombia, I ventured into the heart of Comuna 13. What used to be one of the most dangerous comuna's in Medellin became a comuna filled with local talent. I was greeted by a burst of colors that seemed to dance in harmony with the beats of the city. Every wall, every building, every alleyway had become a canvas, an open invitation for artists to tell stories and convey emotions.
The murals that adorn the streets are more than just paint on walls, each one of them represent in some way the struggles, triumphs, and dreams of the community. Each stroke of paint carries the weight of years gone by, the violence that used to rein over that territory and the fear that tormented those who lived there.

This Graffiti tour serves as a testament to the residents' resilience. After government intervention as well as other events such as the installation of electrical stairs, provided social integration, economic opportunities, reduced isolation, accessibility and a symbol of resistance. The residents of this area began exploring local talents such as dancing, painting, crafts and more as a way to leave behind the violence that inhibited that area.
One of the most striking aspects of the tour was the sense of unity and pride that radiated from the community. They are truly brave for fighting for a brighter future and supporting each other even through the lack of opportunities, resources & others.

The Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour reminded me of the transformative power of art, the resilience of the human spirit, and the beauty of communities coming together to create something truly extraordinary. Do not hesitate to do this tour if interested in learning more about the culture of la Comuna 13, seeing wonderful mural art, and witnessing the remarkable journey of a community that turned adversity into inspiration.
For this tour I highly recommend doing it with"Casa Kolacho", they have the option of tours in english and spanish. Specifically I did the tour with the artist Sara Isabel Jaramillo, she was truly wonderful and you could sense the love she has for the Comuna 13.. This tour included transportation within la Comuna 13, a breakdancing show, riding the electrical stairs, enjoying a popsicle (either of mango, coconut or passion fruit), visiting Casa Kolacho, and a graffiti class.
